A Brief Introduction to
Wuhan Geotechnical Engineering and Surveying Institute (WGESI)

Wuhan Geotechnical Engineering and Surveying Institute (WGESI), supervised by Wuhan Urban Planning & Land Resources Administration Bureau, is a comprehensive nation-granted first-class organization in surveying and mapping design & production. WGESI is the first one in Hubei Province that passed the national first-class examination for archives objective management in January 1999, and obtained the authentication certification of qualification system ISO 9001:2000 at the end of 2001. Authorized by the municipal government of Wuhan, WGESI mainly engages in public services, scientific research, technical development and applications in urban surveying and mapping and geotechnical engineering. WGESI is responsible for providing basic geographic information and surveying services to urban planning, construction and land resource administration for the entire city of Wuhan.

There are 430 staff members in WGESI, with 220 technical members and more than 50 advanced specialties (12 professor-level engineers, 25 senior engineers, 14 members with Ph.D or Master Degree). The business fields cover engineering of surveying and mapping (satellite geodesy, remote sensing and aerophotogrammetry, engineering survey, underground pipeline survey, map compilation and printing), geotechnical engineering (geotechnical investigation, design, construction, monitoring, inspection, testing and supervision), basic geographical information engineering, pile foundation engineering and foundation treatment, and agency of land registration, etc.

Powered by reformation, WGESI takes the path of scientific innovation, and follows the regulations that our organization is revitalized by reformation, thrived by scientific directions, managed by reasonable rules and sustained by diligences. The members in WGESI keep solidarism, forge ahead, and have won many honors in degrees of the state, ministry or province, such as the Advanced Unit for Surveying and Design (golden), the Ten Excellent Unit in National Urban Planning Trade on New Technical Application, the Outstanding Unit of Surveying and Mapping Quality, the National Young Culture Pioneer and so on. In the meantime we have also achieved great success in science research. There are more than 100 achievements awarded by the state, province or municipal administration，and 22 engineers given special honors by the municipal government of Wuhan.

In the latest years, we have build up an intellectualized network platform with large capacity and high speed. There are now 11 sets of GPS receivers, 40 sets of total station, 6 sets of complete digital photogrammetry workstation, more than 230 computers, 16 plotters, 7 engineering drill machines and 20 borers. Additionally, we have a pile machine of 600 tons hydraulic pressure, KTG geotechnical test system and pipeline detector etc.
